Flugzeug Boarding Abläufe Regeln Rituale

Scenes from everyday boarding life

Boarding procedures on the aircraft

Boarding is a bit like a board game where all the rules are known—and yet everyone does something different. Whether frequent travelers, holidaymakers, or people who aren't even supposed to board yet: as soon as the "boarding begins" light comes on, the choreography of anticipation, orientation, suitcase Tetris, and little moments that are almost impossible to plan but happen again and again begins.

The boarding loop

As soon as the first groups are called up, a familiar scene unfolds:
Some people walk purposefully to the queue, then realize their group isn't due for another ten minutes, and turn back—but only halfway. Others stay "strategically close" to the gate, as if there were a surprise departure. It's not chaos; it's more of a global ritual. "I'm waiting... but I'll be here anyway."

Baggage logistics

Above their heads, a second ritual is taking place: the hand luggage puzzle.
Bags are turned, pushed, and stacked—sometimes as a team effort, sometimes in quiet contemplation. Crew members offer support, kindly explaining how to create space, demonstrating astonishing spatial awareness. Anyone who has ever tried to lift their trolley into an overflowing overhead compartment without any strength training knows: it's a moment of truth.

The search for the seat

Then comes the great hunt for numbers: Row 17… 18… 19…
Passengers count, turn around, look forward again, and realize they've already walked past it—a classic scenario. There are brief pauses in the aisle as two people simultaneously head for the same seat. Nobody knows exactly who will go first, but somehow it always works out in the end.

The jacket question

Another perennial question: "Where do I put my jacket?" Some keep it on their lap, others put it in the overhead compartment, some hang it over the seatback. Crew members offer tips on how to best save space, as hand luggage takes priority. For many, this is when the internal struggle begins: "Will I stay warm or cold?"

The seating dynamics

Once in line, nonverbal communication begins:
"Should I get up already?" "Can I get past you?" "Is it possible without knee contact?"

Sometimes a friendly nod is enough, sometimes a quick "I'll be right out!" — and then the little dance around armrests, legs, and bags begins. Everyone develops their own technique, and everyone hopes that no one unpacks a sandwich at the last minute.

The moment of peace

When everyone is finally seated, a small miracle occurs:
The noise level drops, people sort their bags, look out the window, or briefly close their eyes. A collective "Now we're ready to go" fills the air—the moment when boarding ends and the journey begins.
